Spice up your BigCommerce SEO: competition is your best friend

From an SEO perspective the open web, one in which you can see the source code of pages and see who links where, means that you should look at competitors as friends.

This might sound counterintuitive, but it actually makes sense: see why your competitor is doing better than you in rankings and learn from them. For free, or at least, with some effort and time, but it is something that you can do.

Of course, doing SEO requires a lot of work and it isn't quite as easy as many would expect. Usually the steps follow this path SEF (search engine friendly - create a site that offers great UX and technically ready for SEO), then SEO (search engine optimization - this is where the wonder happens), and then SEM (search engine marketing - seo plus paid search). And in between social media activity at it's best. Being new in a niche the first thing you should do is to check your competitor, your newly acquired friend.

Bribe Google with your time and get some details about your competition

You cannot bribe Google in the classical sense, well not unless you have a lot of money. All you can do is spend enough time studying it to learn as much as you can from your competition.

One of the first things you can do is to use Search Suggest and see if the competition has gained some suggestions. Go to Google.com (that depends on your location) and type in, "bigcommerce", for example. You will see something like this:

Search volume and keywords used all over the web lead to suggestions. Following those suggestions you can learn a lot about your competition. For example if words like "scam", "complaints" show up in the drop down then you know that a weak point is customer service. Use that to your advantage and play up your superior customer service to gain more customers!

Rand Fishkin started an experiment to see how many searches for a particular keyword would lead to show a suggestion under the search box. The results of that experiment might help you in getting your suggestions to show up in Google.

Bribing Google with our time gets us to another thing in our list: sitelinks. Phil Sharp stumbled on a nice discovery whereby sitelinks may be used sometimes in place of the main link in the search engine results page.

Look for any indication that your competition has a site link instead of the main link. Also, looking at the sitelinks you will be able to see where the comeptition focuses their attention. Being in the same niche as they are you will know that some sitelinks need to be there. Again, your competition showed you, even without asking for any money, what they focus on.

We see from the image above that the main topics aren't really what they should have been: Login and Social Shop 2 could be replaced with the Apps and Integration pages. As you can see, with minimal effort you can pick up some interesting pieces of information.

Study you competitor's website inside and out

The best free way to do this is with the Screaming Frog Crawler. Screaming Frog is a SEO spider, a desktop app that searches a website for any type of issues and shows its findings in neat CSV tables that can be exported and then worked upon. Since learning about SEO I got very fond of CSV files. you never know when you need them.

It can crawl up to 500 URLs of the target site and outputs info about: title tags, redirects, headings, duplicate content (if any, see hash column), images, canonical and URLs.

If your competition is doing something right, then you will see it in the table reports from Screaming Frog.

Once you have pulled out all the elements of the target website, do not forget to look at: content, type of writing, UX, design, site architecture, presentations and all the neat stuff that would make me, a potential customer stay on your site. It's not easy, but the fun you can have discovering what you are doing wrong and knowing where to improve will keep you on track.

Backlink and rank analysis easier than ever

Don't want to spend a fortune on backlink analysis tools? Okay, if you can afford it $150 a month or maybe $300 a month is not a big deal and can speed things up a lot.

Once you have studied your competitor's site you can move on to see what others think has he done to outrank everyone else. Like, link building, for example. They have lots of great links and there fore they rank well. Good for them. and for us too, since we can see who links to them.

Knowing which websites linked to them we can approach those sites and get a backlink from there as well.

How can you get a backlink profile from your competitor? First, you need to create an account with Open Site Explorer.

After you account has been validated and you have logged in, simply type the URL of your competitor in the search box and hit enter. In a short while you will have lots of data coming in. Next step is to download the CSV file (for Bigcommerce it has only 1005 links because I used the free version of OSE) and, if you want, you can study it. Even better is to let some other useful program do the work. Back up this file and then be ready to import it to Link Detective.

Link Detective is a website where you can upload the CSV I mentioned earlier and then let the app create the backlink profile. From an SEO and time perspective: it is awesome. Wanna know how Bigcommerce's backlink profile looks like? Below you can see that almost all of the links are followed and most of them are Unknown, meaning that the Link Detective could not decide where they were placed in a page. I can guess that by now you are really excited about how easy it is to get valuable info about your competition. And you have all the reasons to be happy about these tools since studying your competition will improve your website and its ranking.

Once you get to have their link profile you can see how they rank for some of the keywords you are interested in. There are two options: you could use the SEO Toolbar from Aaron Wall or use Rankelizer, a desktop app that seeks out the rankings of a website.

Each one of these two will require you to enter the website and the keywords to match to. After a very short period of time you get the ranks in SERP and can see which pages are ranking well. Going forward and looking at those pages you can see what makes them so special.

Of course, you can use the same tool to see how you rank. All in all, these free SEO tools will make your life way easier. SEO is much more than this, and BigCommerce SEO is the same as other ecommerce optimization activity you need to do. You simply need to be on top of it and be ready for many changes.
